Aquileia
It was founded by Romans 181 B.C. and became a “capital” of a huge region named X Region Venethia and Histria, rich and powerful, it became one of the most famous towns-fortress of the Empire. The archaeological remains found every where, witness of its illustrious past. The National Archaeological Museum preserves a collection of statues , daily life objects, gems, amber, glasses… and more.
In the Basilica you can admire, perfectly kept, more than 700 sq m of marvellous mosaics that had been the pavement of the 4TH century church. Having been protected by the further-built churches’ pavements, these beautiful mosaics are the largest and most precious ever found rich in theological religious meanings.
