Trieste
Trieste lies at the very northern end of the Adriatic Sea, in an ample gulf bordered by the Karst table-land The underground water system and the calcareous nature of this plateau have created the “Karst phenomenon” (abysses, caves and “doline” (funnel-shaped depressions), The erosion by water on the limestone rocks, presents interesting phenomena on surfaces. Grottos are open for visits (Grotta Gigante and others. Trieste was part of the Xth Region Venethia and Histria (see Aquileia outlook)) and underwent under barbarians. An old city quarter with the Cathedral to Saint Martyr Giusto as well as Middle Ages town still exists. To save itself from a siege by Venetians, Trieste made its first spontaneous act of submission to the Dukes of Austria in 1382. Up until the beginning of the 18th Century, the city lived through a rather turbulent and obscure period, producing salt, Trieste was till the mid of the 1700 a very small city. 1717 - 1719 Charles VI of Hapsburg granted the right of navigation in the Adriatic Sea and the Free Port was proclaimed. This was the real beginning of a “New Life” for this city that became very important for hole business in the Austrian Empire governed by the Hapsburg family.
Trieste still presevers the multi-ethnic athmosphere and still has many different religion community. You can visit temples and churches: Catholics, Orthodox, Sinagoge and others, elegant palaces, historical caffees…. And more
Contemporary History: Very important in the 1900 world history. 1918, Italy re-conquered the area and Trieste (with Histria and part of Dalmazia land) are officially Italians. Second war, 1943 - 1945 SS Reich governing the area and headquarters of SS Adriatisches Kustenland, Risiera di San Sabba (prisons and also crematory camp), Trieste cut out from the inner-land areas and on the border to Jugoslavia (foibas on Karst used and monument today).
Controlled by Americans, British, Australians end New Zelanders as the Free Teritory of Trieste till 1954.
Today the city is the chief town of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
